Despite a citywide decline in murder rates, NYPD statistics show North Brooklyn murder rates are steadily increasing.
Murders went up eight percent in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Crown Heights, Bushwick, Forte Greene, East New York, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint in the past nine months.
Some murders were shown to be connected to drugs and fights, but many others were involved innocent bystanders.
North Brooklyn precincts has also seen a rise in shootings, shooting victims has risen almost nine percent while citywide figures are down almost seven percent.
The 73rd precinct, which cover Brownsville, has logged the largest increase, with murders up 37 percent and shooting victims up 50 percent.
Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said the murder rate has dropped eight percent and crime overall has dropped 20 percent in North Brooklyn since 2001.
"The increased number of gun arrests [up 9%] ... this year, as well as arrests overall [up 11%], is indicative of the Operation Impact and other resources being deployed in Brooklyn North to address crime there," he said.
