Splitting Hairs

A Detroit Charter School student was sent home on suspension because of his hairdo.

Claudius Benson, 14, was suspended by Old Redford Academy, according to school officials because his hair was too long. The schools dress code calls for "close-cropped" hair.

The parent of the teen, who has been growing his hair for 10 years, says the school has gone too far and she plans to sue.

Alecha Benson says she follows the Old Testament passage that she interprets as prohibiting her son's hair being cut. To her it is against their religion to have haircuts.

She said, "We don't feel that we have to change our belief systems for my son to get an education. We have a right to chose to continue in the school that I enrolled him in. ... He's anxious to go back to school."

The school wants to confirm that Claudius hairdo is due to religious practices. Meanwhile, he has been out of school for nearly a month.
