Guyanese Independence Day

Aside from being a day to remember those that have given their lives for the peace and safety of our nation, today is also the independence day of one of the four non-Spanish speaking territories in South America.

Considered a part of the Caribbean, the cooperative Republic of Guyana, previously known as British Guiana, came under British control in the 18th century. Slavery was abolished in the nation, located north of the equator, in 1834. It remained under British control until May 26, 1966. It became a republic in 1970 and has remained a commonwealth nation.

Guyanese live by the motto: "One people, one nation, one destiny." Despite years of power struggle and a slow economy, Guyanese people have found ways to preserve their rich culture and heritage.
